How Do We Attract Talent in the Face of Rising Wages in the Retail Sector? A perspective from a Hospitality Recruitment Agency

Is the raising of wages in the supermarket and retail markets going to negatively impact the hospitality industry? A perspective from a Hospitality Recruitment Agency

In the realm of retail, a seismic shift is taking place that could affect the hospitality industry. Retail and supermarket giants such as Sainsbury's and Lidl are significantly boosting their pay structures.

Sainsbury's increased its base pay by 9.1%, offering an unprecedented £12 per hour, and for those in London, £13.15 per hour. Lidl is not far behind, raising its pay by up to 17%, also with a base pay of £12, and a London rate of £13.55. A substantial £3.50 extra per hour is also on offer for employees working the night shift, something that the hospitality industry competes with.

It's a bold move, establishing a new benchmark in employee remuneration.

If we're to keep attracting and retaining talent, we need to look beyond the paycheck. The industry needs to focus on enhancing job satisfaction and employee retention. As a hospitality recruitment agency, we've been addressing this issue head-on through our workshops on employee happiness, motivation and retention. We need to tap into what attracts people to hospitality in the first place and help them grow within the industry. But, if the choice boils down to a simple wage comparison at that entry-level, we're on shaky ground.

What does your business offer beyond compensation? A positive work environment? A thriving community? Opportunities for learning and progression? Perhaps staff can travel the world with their skills, or your business leads forward with strong values. The industry needs to leverage its strengths and be vocal about them. At Organic Recruitment, we work with clients across the UK and the Middle East whose value propositions are extremely appealing. We take pride in connecting these businesses with passionate professionals who will help drive them forward.

However, we must remain forward-thinking and acknowledge the impact that retail wage increases could potentially have on our industry. This potential scenario calls for a proactive approach. Let's put our heads together, and address this imminent challenge. Our industry, its vibrancy, and its future depend on it.
